Why Brewers Signed Cooper Pratt to 8-Year Deal Before MLB Debut

The Brewers committed to Cooper Pratt before he ever debuted in Milwaukee. Why?

In this story:

The Milwaukee Brewers made a shocking decision early this week when they opted to sign prospect Cooper Pratt to a massive eight-year deal worth just over $50 million. But the part of the deal that made a lot of fans scratch their heads is the fact that Pratt hasn't played in the big leagues yet. And it's unclear when he will make the jump.

Last year, the Boston Red Sox gave Kristian Campbell a big contract extension early in the year, but Campbell hasn't been back in the big leagues in nearly a year. Still, the Brewers are seemingly confident in Pratt.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal recently did a deep dive into why the Brewers opted to sign Pratt to a massive new contract before he ever made it to the big leagues.

Brewers needed to sign Cooper Pratt early if they were going to sign him

"Again, it’s simple. The three-time defending NL Central champions are not about to match the spending of the division rival Chicago Cubs, who in the past three months have signed third baseman Alex Bregman, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and second baseman Nico Hoerner for a combined $431 million," Rosenthall wrote. "The Brewers prefer to make smaller bets. The eight-year, $82 million contract they awarded outfielder Jackson Chourio prior to his debut was one. The Pratt deal is another.

"Pratt, who turns 22 in August, has played only three games at Triple A. Some club officials, however, compare his defense at shortstop to that of their former All-Star at the position, J.J. Hardy. Citing Pratt’s speed, athleticism and aptitude, they figure his offense will come. And even if Pratt proves only a defense-first type, his floor could be $50.75 million. In that sense, he is similar to Crow-Armstrong, an elite defender and developing hitter whose new Cubs deal is worth $115 million."

Pratt has incredible upside, and the deal is much more affordable than it may seem. Milwaukee can't afford to give out $100 million contracts like some of the big-market teams in the league. They're much better off signing players early if they're going to sign them.

The Brewers will lose their good players if they make it to free agency. Signing Pratt now is the best way to bet on him being a star while retaining him in Milwaukee for nearly a decade. Other teams don't need to take risks like this because they have the money to re-sign their top talent.
