Chicago Cubs 'Have No Interest' In Extending Ace

In this story:
It has been all roses for the Chicago Cubs in recent weeks after they have fought their way right into the playoff mix after being completely out of the picture two months ago.
Entering Monday, they hold the last Wild Card spot after winning their weekend series against the Kansas City Royals.
Behind the scenes however, there could be some turmoil brewing.
Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY published his column on Sunday where he reported that the Cubs "have no intention to offer starter Marcus Stroman a contract extension after the season."
This comes after their ace was sidelined with right hip inflammation August 1 and went back on the injured list with a mysterious rib cartilage fracture before his scheduled start back against the Chicago White Sox.
The timetable for Stroman to return is unknown with some speculation that he might not pitch again at all this season.
That would be quite the blow to Chicago in the middle of a playoff race and for their aspirations if they get into the postseason.
Pitching has been the biggest question mark surrounding the team during the back stretch of the season and losing someone at the top of the rotation only amplifies those questions.
The right hander is owed $24 million in the final year of his contract if he opts into his player option. He can also decide to decline that option and hit the open market in free agency.
Nightengale reports that the Cubs are wondering "if Stroman will opt out of his contract after all."
Coming off that injury and poor play during the summer, the market might not be as robust for the ace as he thinks. There's a good chance he opts into his contract to play another season with Chicago in 2024.
