Chicago Cubs Deadline Addition Hayden Wesneski has Best Outing in Iowa

In this story:
After a rough couple of starts to kick off his career in the Chicago Cubs organization, third time was indeed the charm as Hayden Wesneski turned in his best performance with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs so far.
The righty, who was acquired in the Scott Effross trade with the New York Yankees, pitched five scoreless innings, striking five and allowing just two total baserunners. The 24-year-old retired the final 12 batters he faces and had everything, including his electric slider, working for him.
It was a big step in the right direction for the former sixth-round pick, as a good finish to the season paired with a strong spring will plant him squarely in the mix for a 2023 rotation spot in the majors.
Elsewhere on the farm:
Triple-A: Iowa Cubs (52-63) at Indianapolis Indians (56-57): L 3-2
- Darius Hill went 1-3 with a walk from the leadoff spot for the second day in a row. The outfielder is batting .338 on the season.
- David Bote clubbed a homer, one of his two hits in four at-bats. The righty has an OPS of .795 in Triple-A.
- CD Pelham made his Iowa debut after being promoted from Double-A Tennessee. The former Texas Ranger got two outs, walking a batter and giving up a hit while also striking a man out. Closer Ben Leeper inherited and stranded both runners.
Double-A: Tennessee Smokies (59-52) at Birmingham Barons (50-61): W 4-3
- Miguel Amaya walked and singled in his first two plate appearances, making a bid to reach base three times for the third night in a row, but was pulled before his third plate appearance. Bryce Ball replaced Amaya at DH in the fifth inning.
- Chase Strumpf went 2-2 with two walks. The former second-round pick has an OPS of .850 this season.
- Nelson Maldonado roped a double as his lone knock of the night. The former Florida Gator was demoted after struggling in Triple-A but is batting .403 over his two separate stints in Tennesee.
- The Smokies bullpen pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing just two runs while striking out eight. Peyton Remy in particular struck out five Barons over his 2 1/3 innings.
High-A Game 1: South Bend Cubs (61-50) vs. Beloit Sky Carp (56-54): W 3-2
- Luis Devers dominant season continued, tossing five innings of one-run ball while striking out five as well. The 22-year-old has been a revelation this season, dominating with South Bend and carrying an ERA of just 0.74.
- Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a game-tying single in the eighth and would later score the walk-off winning run on an error. The lefty went 1-4.
- Pablo Aliendo drove in his eighth run of the month in the fourth. The catcher stayed hor going 1-2 with a walk.
High-A Game 2: South Bend Cubs (62-50) vs. Beloit Sky Carp (56-55): W 4-3
- Kohl Franklin capped off what was a fantastic night of pitching in the Cubs organization with a shutout, five-inning, nine-strikeout gem. Though Franklin has struggled at various points this season after an injury-plagued 2021, he's still plenty talented and regarded as one of the better pitching prospects in the system.
- Yohendrick Pinango went 1-3 with two RBI. The outfielder had three hits over the course of the doubleheader.
- Casey Optiz went 0-1 and had two of South Bend's three walks.
Single-A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans (69-43) at Down East Wood Ducks (58-54): L 14-2
- The Pelicans committed three errors leading to five unearned runs. Myrtle Beach had more errors than hits as a team (2).
- It was a tough night for the pitching as every Pelicans pitcher gave up three runs or more (Though not all were earned).
Transactions:
- There were no transactions in the organization Friday.
