Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (52) throws a pitch against the Arizona Diamondbacks during the second inning in game two of the 2023 World Series at Globe Life Field on Oct. 28, 2023, Arlington, Texas.

Jordan Montgomery Makes Final Tune-Up Start with Reno

Montgomery threw 71 pitches with Triple-A Reno and is set to join the Diamondbacks starting rotation next time out in San Francisco.

Jordan Montgomery made his final minor league start with Reno, but the results weren't great. The left-hander allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits but struck out seven. The velocity continued to be down two ticks from his 2023 velocity, clocking in at 91.3 MPH on his sinker vs. 93.3 last season. That's in line with the velocity readings from his previous start.

The plan was for Montgomery to stretch out to five innings and around 75 pitches in his final tune-up. He threw 71 pitches, so he's stretched out from a pitch count perspective despite failing to go five innings. His next start will come in the series against San Francisco, with April 19th the likely target date.

Triple-A: Reno Aces 8, Tacoma Rainiers 7

Adrian Del Castillo went 1-for-5 at the plate with an RBI single, but also made an out on the bases in the same play. The single came off the bat at 104.5 MPH, continuing his stretch of hard-hit balls to 16 on 24 balls in play and 14 coming at 100+ MPH.

Tristin English was 3-for-4, including a home run in the 5th. The ball left the bat at 104 MPH. Jorge Barrosa appeared as a pinch-runner, scoring the tying run in the top of the 8th inning.

Justin Martinez closed out the ball game for his third save of the year, striking out the side on just 12 pitches. He induced five whiffs on six swings and racked up a strikeout on his four-seamer, splitter, and slider. Martinez has pitched scoreless baseball in three of six outings to start the year.

Double-A: Amarillo Sod Poodles 0, Midland RockHounds 2

Yilber Diaz was good, but didn't receive any run support. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out eight in five innings, but took a tough luck loss after allowing two runs on five hits. Deyvison De Los Santos and Ivan Melendez combined to go 0-for-8 with five strikeouts.

High-A: Hillsboro Hops 5, Vancouver Canadians 6

Gino Groover will be out for the considerable future, as the D-backs hitting prospect has a broken wrist and will be out for at least three months. Fellow top prospect Tommy Troy had a solid game, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Low-A: Visalia Rawhide vs. San Jose Giants Postponed

The game will be made up as a seven-inning doubleheader on April 14th.
