Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Geraldo Perdomo (2) throws to first base after fielding a grounder

Geraldo Perdomo Headed for an MRI on Injured Knee

The Diamondbacks infield depth is being tested early by injuries

The level of concern for the Diamondbacks over Geraldo Perdomo's knee injury has likely increased this afternoon. Perdomo injured his knee running the bases on Wednesday and had to be removed from the game. Torey Lovullo initially said the All-Star shortstop was "day to day"

After traveling to Atlanta with the team Perdomo tried to work out this afternoon, but as reported by AZ Central's Nick Piecoro, that did not go well. As a result, Perdomo is now headed to get an MRI on Saturday.

One of the hot topics in Spring Training was the fierce competition for backup shortstop. In less than a week, the team has gone from having too many options to being extremely thin. During the spring, the team had no fewer than six infielders getting reps at short and vying for the backup role.

Those names included Blaze Alexander and Jace Peterson, who both made the team out of camp. Emmanuel Rivera was traded to the Marlins, Elvis Andrus was released, and Jordan Lawlar broke his thumb and is out two months. Beyond Alexander and Peterson, the only other option is Kevin Newman. He's in Reno however, and not on the 40-man roster.

One piece of good news for the team is that right handed hitting outfielder/DH Randall Grichuk was activated today. He's not in the lineup against right-hander Spencer Strider, but is expected to play on Saturday and Sunday when the Braves start two left-handers, Max Fried and Chris Sale.
