Corbin Carroll Injures Knee in Diamondbacks Win

An 11-4 victory over the Rockies marred by injury for the rookie sensation, Geraldo Perdomo has another big game
Diamondbacks at Rockies April 29th

Box Score

Corbin Carroll raced toward the wall, leaping at full speed trying to rob a double off the bat of Ryan McMahon in the bottom of the 6th inning. Unable to make the play, Carroll smashed his left knee directly into the wall and crumpled onto the warning track while Alek Thomas went to pick up the ball.  By the time the cameras went back to Carroll he was laying on the ground in a contorted position grabbing his knee.

Carroll managed to get up with some help and then walked off the field with a noticeable limp. He gingerly made his way down the dugout steps and into the clubhouse.  A little while later trainer Ryan DiPanfilo was seen in the dugout giving an update to a very grim looking Torey Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Bannister.

Fortunately things are not as dire as those images conveyed.  Lovullo reported after the game that they "dodged a bullet"  and Carroll has a left knee contusion, and is currently day-to-day. There will be no roster move necessary and he will not go on the injured list. Carroll currently has an eight game hitting streak and is batting .309/.374/.536, .910 OPS with four homers, 10 steals and 19 runs scored. Considered the favorite to win the NL Rookie of the year, he has lived up to the billing and then some.

The game itself was in many ways a typical Coors Field game. The Diamondbacks offense jumped on Rockies starter Noah Davis for seven runs in two innings, including a six-run second inning. The big blows in the inning were a two-run double by Josh Rojas and three-run homer by the red-hot Geraldo Perdomo.  Perdomo also singled in the fourth, coming around to score on a Christian Walker base hit, and added another RBI single in the 6th inning, extending the D-backs lead to 9-1 at that point.

Perdomo finished the game with a .390/.463/.627 triple slash, 1.090 OPS, including six doubles, a triple, and two homers with 16 RBI. It's a stunning breakout for the 23-year-old shortstop.

Tommy Henry started for the Diamondbacks and pitched much better than his final line appears.  After retiring the side in order in the first inning he gave up a run in the second on a double and a base hit. He followed that up with three scoreless innings through the fifth however. Perhaps tiring, or just seeing the middle of the order for the third time, the Rockies started to get to him. He gave up a single, then McMahon's double and another two-base hit hit to C.J. Cron.

Lovullo pulled Henry at that point bringing in Jose Ruiz who gave up a base hit and fielders choice ground out that scored Cron before getting the last two outs of the inning.  Henry's final line was 5.1 IP, seven hits, four earned runs with a walk and three strike outs. He threw strikes, and trusted his defense and any game you get into the 6th in Coors field in line for a win with a 9-4 lead has to be considered a good outing.

With the Rockies creeping closer the D-backs offense kept tacking on. Doubles by Thomas and Jose Herrera scored a run in the 8th. Christian Walker hit his fourth homer of the year in the top of the 9th, extending the lead to 11-4.  Fortunately the D-backs wouldn't need those extra runs thanks to three scoreless innings from Kevin Ginkel, Scott McGough and Anthony Miesiewicz.

The D-backs improve to 16-12, and remain in first place in the NL West. They will try for the series sweep tomorrow behind Ryne Nelson. Game time is 12:10 P.M. MST
