In this story:

The Diamondbacks have made their first selection in the 2023 MLB Draft, selecting Stanford infielder Tommy Troy. Troy is a middle infielder by trade, although he was Stanford's third baseman in the 2023 collegiate season. The D-backs prefer toolsy, athletic up-the-middle defenders, with Troy very much fitting that mold.

In his junior year, Troy hit .394 with 17 home runs and a 1.177 OPS as he helped Stanford to a regular season PAC-12 Title. That's coming off the heels of a strong summer showcase with Cotuit in the Cape Cod League, in which he hit .310 with five home runs and a .917 OPS.

Troy was on a short list of college bats that would be in play with the D-backs' selection. Not only should he provide them some potential savings against a slot value of $5 million, but also could be on a fast track to the big leagues. It isn't out of the realm of possibility he could come up in the D-backs current contention window, with an earliest ETA of the 2025 season. He will likely move off shortstop to play second base and could being Jordan Lawlar's potential double play partner for many years.  The other possibility is he could stay at third base. We'll be checking in with Diamondbacks scouting direct Ian Rebhan later this even and try to get an update on the team's intentions.
