Dodgers 'Seriously Discussing' Signing Former All-Star Starting Pitcher in Need of Revamp
The Dodgers are reportedly looking at bringing in a very familiar name that has been linked with them for some now time. With the team looking at all different angles this offseason to improve their starting rotation, they will likely add at least one reclamation project.
The best candidate for that this winter could be starter Lucas Giolito. Giolito almost was traded to LA at the trade deadline, but the Dodgers couldn't close the deal, and now may pursue him on a prove-it deal this winter.
“So there are signs pointing to the Dodgers and Giolito’s conversations going on now turning into a signing. When that happens, I don’t know, but I can tell you they are having serious discussions. If the Dodgers do sign Giolito, he would be a four or five starter and be able to execute their game plan.”
LA believes that they can fix Giolito as they have with multiple pitchers in the past. He still has quality stuff on the mound, and showed it before he was traded last season.
“And he’s a guy, from what I understand, follows a game plan perfectly. If you have a bad game plan, he’ll execute it, but it won’t go well. The Dodgers are known for their game planning, they know how to get guys back on track, there are certain types of pitchers they believe they can help, and Lucas Giolito is in that category.”
Giolito was solid for the Chicago White Sox before he was moved, posting an ERA of 3.79 in 21 games. But after he was shipped to the Los Angeles Angels, everything changed for him.
He saw his ERA jump up to 6.89 in six games with the Halos, and they ended up placing him on waivers. The veteran was claimed by the Cleveland Guardians, but he didn't perform much better. He posted an ERA of 7.04 in six starts with them, adding to his poor second half.
Before being moved, many believed that he would be a top free agent on the market this winter. But his performance leaves much to answer, so he could be looking at a one-year deal to boost his value back up. And what better team to help than the hometown Dodgers.
He would slot in toward the back of the rotation and could provide solid depth for the team. LA needs to fill the gaps with guys like Giolito, so this could be a very solid signing for them.
