Mets Seen as Potential Landing Spot for Reunion with Athletics Pitcher

The New York Mets have finished up their first two matchups of the season, and the results have been mixed with a 3-3 record. While it is still very early, the team will undoubtedly look to improve at some point.

Following winning their first home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Mets went on the road and lost two out of three games to the St. Louis Cardinals. Even though it is only their second series of the year, losing a series to the Cardinals is not ideal.

During the three-game set, it was the offense that really let the team down, but tough stretches for the unit early on shouldn’t be a major concern as of now. While the starting rotation has been solid so far, this very well could be a unit that the team will look to upgrade at some point this season.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently wrote about the Mets being a potential landing spot for Luis Severino, who had an excellent campaign with the team in 2024.

Reunion with Luis Severino Would Provide Depth for Rotation

Severino has been a name frequently mentioned in rumors since he got off to a slow start with the Athletics. In 2024, the right-hander was able to turn his career back around with the Mets. On New York’s magical run to the NLCS, Severino played a significant part in that.

Two years ago, he totaled an 11-7 record and 3.91 ERA. However, after landing a nice contract with the Athletics, who were trying to make a splash before they head to Las Vegas, the right-hander has struggled. Last season, he totaled an 8-11 record and 4.54 ERA. There was certainly a noticeable difference in his road stats compared to his stats at home, and he was fairly outspoken about not liking pitching in a minor league park.

What makes any potential interest in Severino tricky is his current contract. In 2026, he is set to make $25 million, and then he also has a player option for $22 million in 2027. If the Athletics were to trade him to the Mets or anyone else, they would undoubtedly have to eat a lot of that money. Due to some of his struggles, it would be shocking if he didn’t exercise that option for 2027 at this point.

Overall, while Severino might not be an ace, he could be a potential option if New York needs help in the rotation. Due to his contract, the Mets wouldn’t have to give up much to get him, but it would be the financial aspect that would be most challenging.
