When the New York Mets were sellers at the MLB trade deadline this season, it was a concession that they were punting on the rest of the season. Instead of competing for the World Series like many expected coming into the year, they shifted their focus to rebuilding for the future.

Five players were moved at the deadline, including their big named pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. In return, the franchise was able to load up on minor league prospects as they get ready for a rebuild.

It also allowed the front office to see more of the pitching pieces they still have on the team. One player in particular has taken the opportunity and shined in his recent starts.

Left hander David Peterson had a rough start to the season. He began the season in the starting rotation but was optioned to Triple-A after a horrific start that saw him post a record of 1-5 with an 8.08 ERA. He made one appearance with the Mets in June before being brought back in July and moving to the bullpen.

The 27-year-old former first round pick was put back into the starting rotation in August and he has delivered.

Peterson's ERA in the month is 3.27. He capped off his strong showing by having his best outing of the year. On Sunday against the Los Angles Angels, he went 7.0 innings allowing one earned run on three hits.

Manager Buck Showalter took notice telling Matthew Ritchie of MLB.com, "He’s quietly been a real competitive force. But that was the key of the game -- his outing. Regardless of everything else that could be talked about, we needed a starter to get deep into the game, and Pete dialed that up for us."

The left hander has talked about wanting to be part of the rotation going forward in future seasons. He's putting together a good case that he can be one of next year's starters if he continues to perform at this level.
