Padres News: Friars Star Admits Team's Heavy Confidence Has Hurt Them in 2023

In this story:
The San Diego Padres are filled with All-Star players all across the roster. The ball players at their disposal have accomplished so much in their careers, from Juan Soto, Feranndo Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and others. The talent is undeniable, and they've worked their butt off to get where they are.
Unfortunately, with that talent comes some ego and confidence; for this Friars team, that confidence or overconfidence has seemed to be the team's Achilles heel in a way. The Padres are struggling to do the little things that great teams do to be such. Because of that, the Friars are struggling in a way none of us thought they would. Padres superstar Manny Machado is not oblivious to that and told Padres insider Kevin Acce that overconfidence couple be the end of this team.
“I think we just have confident players who believe in their craft,” Machado said. “And sometimes that kind of haunts you a little bit at times. It haunts me as a player as well. You get a little bit too comfortable and you think it’s gonna come easy. And it doesn’t come that easy.”

The play of the Padres illustrates that to a tee. The Friars look disinterested; they're going through the motions as if everything will go according to plan.
That's not the case. There is no sense of urgency; the Padres lack that, and it shows.
San Diego has now fallen eight-game back from the final spot of the Wild Card. As the days go on, it feels like their chances of being a decent team are slipping, little by little. It's frustrating to witness, and there is no sign of it turning around. It will take a miracle for the Frairs to fight back into the playoff race, let alone back to .500.
It's going to take a lot more than a hoorah speech from Machado to get things going.
