Padres Notes: SD Linked to All-Star, Surprise Mason Miller Decision, Nick Pivetta Trade?

In this story:
The San Diego Padres had an off-day on Thursday as they traveled to Boston to get set for a three-game series against the Red Sox.
The Padres enter the series at 2-4, one game better than the disappointing 1-5 Red Sox.
The Padres offense has been nonexistent early in the season, scoring more than three runs just once (in their most recent game). Because of that, the Padres were linked to an All-Star infielder in a potential blockbuster trade ahead of this year's deadline.
During the Padres' 7-1 win on Wednesday, manager Craig Stammen deployed closer Mason Miller in the eighth inning, setting him up to get a four-out save. Five days earlier, Stammen said that wouldn't be an option this early in the year. The team appeared to reverse course on that decision.
“We kind of needed a win,” Stammen said after the game of the decision to use Miller in the eighth. “It’s important to get a win. When we can get a win, we’ve got to get one. Having the appropriate time off after a one-plus [inning outing] is what we were looking for.”
He added: “At this point in the season, with all the off-days in April, it made a little bit more sense today."
Finally, right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta was labeled as a potential top trade chip at some point this season. Pivetta has an opt out at the end of this year, meaning this could be his final season in San Diego. If the Padres want to shed some payroll while adding to their farm system, Pivetta could theoretically be moved.
However, it's unlikely the Padres look to trade from their starting rotation, which is the team's biggest weakness on the roster.
