Padres Named Top Landing Spot for $22 Million Infielder in Potential Blockbuster Trade

In this story:
The San Diego Padres offense has been sluggish out the gate and there's one infielder who could provide a solution for the team's early struggles in 2026.
The Padres don't necessarily need another infielder, but their lineup needs help. What better way to address that need than with another first base option?
Yandy Diaz of the Tampa Bay Rays could be the perfect fit for the Friars this season, says Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer — and he's right.
"Despite his age, he's a .293 hitter with 100 home runs in eight seasons with the Rays. He set a career high with 25 long ones last year. We know he's certainly not lacking in the raw power to do better," he wrote.
"Díaz is perfectly playable as an everyday first baseman or DH, though the ultimate cheat code would be a contender landing him and using him as a platoon hitter. He has a career .901 OPS against lefties."
The Padres, as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates have been named potential landing spots. However, the likelihood of a trade even happening is contingent on whether the Rays organization believes it can contend this year.
What are the odds of Tampa reaching October? Well, the Rays haven't reached the postseason since 2023 and are currently projected to be the fourth- or fifth-best team in the AL East.
This isn't the first time Diaz has been listed as a trade candidate in the past few seasons, but president of baseball operations A.J. Preller will have to get creative with how to acquire the 34-year-old given their limited resources to orchestrate a trade.
How Would Yandy Diaz Fit With Padres?
Diaz would shore up a Padres lineup that has scored more than three runs just once through the first six games of the 2026 season. He could also man the Padres' leadoff spot, one that has brought tons of questions to manager Craig Stammen early this year.
Diaz is the Rays' leadoff hitter, and currently leads the league with 12 hits while hitting two home runs with eight RBIs and an OPS of 1.127. With him at the top, the Padres could readjust their lineup to have ample run producing opportunities for Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill.
Diaz is on a one-year, $12 million deal with a conditional club option for $10 million next season. If the Rays are out of the postseason race by July — or just want to reload as they always do — Diaz will be a prime trade candidate.
Here's what the Padres lineup could theoretically look like with Diaz:
- Yandy Diaz, 1B
- Fernando Tatis Jr., RF
- Jackson Merrill, CF
- Manny Machado, 3B
- Ramón Laureano, LF
- Gavin Sheets, DH
- Xander Bogaerts, SS
- Jake Cronenworth, 2B
- Freddy Fermin, C
Padres Not Worried About Slow Offensive Start to Season
The Padres are 2-4 following their opening homestand, but the team isn't worried.
“Not frustrating at all,” Padres star Manny Machado said when asked about his frustration with the start of the season. “It would’ve been frustrating if we weren’t having good at-bats. … We’re hitting the ball hard, having good at-bats as a group. Obviously, we would like to score more runs. Obviously. But the at-bats are there.”
Things are starting to look up for the Padres following their 7-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants Wednesday. The matchup was the first time the team scored four-plus runs in 2026.
“Today, was an example of what we could be, the type of team that we expected — and have," Stammen said.
The Padres hadn't begun a season with six games of three runs or fewer since the franchise's first season in 1969. There's no pressure to win games in April, but it appears the Padres lineup has finally reached a breakthrough.
San Diego could still use more pop in its lineup, regardless of Machado's comments. The team's disappointing wild-card exit in the playoffs last year was evidence of that.
