Dombrowski Strikes Again Adding Depth To Phillies Roster

A last minute trade by Dave Dombrowski is set just in time for Opening Day.

Just when we all thought the Philadelphia Phillies’ roster was set, Dave Dombrowski went ahead and pulled out a terrific trade from nowhere.

The Phillies picked up right-handed center fielder Cristian Pache from the Oakland Athletics for Minor League relief pitcher Billy Sullivan.

Only 24, Pache came up with the Atlanta Braves and was believed to be a top prospect heading into the 2021 season. He only played in 24 regular season games with the Braves but did compete in the 2020 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

When the Braves acquired Matt Olson, he was part of the package sent to Oakland.

Since Pache is out of Minor League options, he’s going to be on the roster. And he’ll be a solid option off the bench, one that was unexpected.

Dalton Guthrie appears to be the odd man out for now.

In 332 career plate appearances, Pache has slashed just .156/.205/.234 with eight doubles, two triples, four home runs and one more in the postseason. He has slashed .278/.328/.404 in six Minor League seasons. His best year was 2019 split between Double A and Triple A in the Braves’ system.

Dombrowski made this move based on potential and it was well worth it. There’s nothing but upside here. The Phillies gave up virtually nothing and have a chance to win this trade in a big way.

Is Pache as talented as Matt Vierling?

No.

Was acquiring Pache the right move?

Yes.

Dombrowski’s track record has been rock solid with the Phillies. He has earned the trust of the passionate fan base.

If Pache turns out to be a steal, everyone wins – Dombrowski, the fans and the Phillies.
