Philadelphia Phillies Sign First-Round Pick To Above Slot-Value Deal
Philadelphia Phillies first-round pick Aidan Miller signed with the organization on Tuesday, per MLB.com.
Miller, who was the No. 27 selection overall, signed a $3.1 million deal, slightly above the slot value for the pick, which was $2.968 million.
Miller, who plays third base, went to Mitchell High School in Florida. That puts him about 25 miles away from the Phillies’ Clearwater minor league complex. He missed his senior season after he broke the hamate bone in his left hand in his first at-bat of the year.
By signing with the Phillies, he’ll no longer be going to the University of Arkansas, where he committed to play college baseball.
To some scouts he was considered the best high school corner infielder in the draft class with plus-power potential.
Miller was part of a run of prep players for the Phillies at the start of their draft. Along with Miller, they took Devin Saltiban, an outfielder from Hilo, Hawaii, in the third round, and TayShaun Walton, an outfielder from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
Philadelphia has a bonus pool of $5.185 million to pay its draft picks. They must sign all of their selections by 5 p.m. eastern on July 25.
