Philadelphia Phillies Announce Roster Moves on Thursday

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced a flurry of roster moves on Thursday. Get caught up.

The Philadelphia Phillies have announced that they have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

To make room on the 26-man roster, the Phillies have optioned Yunior Marte and have designated for assignment James McArthur to make room on the 40-man roster.

Hoffman has a career ERA of 5.68 ERA over the course of seven MLB seasons and 348.1 innings pitched. He has seen time with the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies.

However, Hoffman has allowed seven earned runs in 9.0 innings pitched in Triple-A this season. Philadelphia needs help with depth in the bullpen and Hoffman has veteran experience.

Additionally, Nick Nelson was reinstated off of the Double-A injured list and optioned to Double-A Reading. Nelson is also an excellent source of depth for the Phillies later down the line if needed.

Nelson staying in Double-A will allow him to remain stretched out as a starter in case the need arises for the rotation.
