Philadelphia Phillies Make More Roster Cuts As Opening Day Looms
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to trim down their roster as they made five more cuts on Monday. The most high-profile cut came in the release of right-hander Mark Appel.
Appel is a fan-favorite and is a unique success story for the organization. The Houston Astros drafted Appel with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft. In 2015, Philadelphia acquired Appel in a trade with the Astros.
The right-hander then made his MLB debut with the Phillies on June 29 last season where he pitched one inning. He then elected free agency before re-signing again with the organization this winter.
Appel instantly became a paragon in Philadelphia for his honesty and openness when it came to his career and how it has affected his personal life. He is also a gritty competitor who embodies what it means to compete for the City of Philadelphia.
He is a true underdog story.
Philadelphia also reassigned left-hander Ben Bowden, righty Louis Head and catcher Max McDowell to minor league camp. All of which were expected moves.
