U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh Offers Assistance on MLB Lockout

It’s been 67 days since the MLB lockout began, and it may seem hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now, U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh has said via spokesperson that he has talked with both sides about the ongoing negotiations.

Marty Walsh has historically been a pro-union figure, dating back to his days as head of Laborers’ Union Local 223, a position which he held until he was elected Boston mayor.

Walsh said about the present conundrum, “I have spoken to both the MLBPA and MLB about the ongoing contract negotiations and encourage both sides to continue engagement.”

He continued, “Like any contract negotiation in any industry, I stand ready to help facilitate productive conversations that result in the best outcome for workers and employers.”

Using Walsh as a mediator could be an alluring strategy for both the MLB and MLBPA. Especially because last week, the MLBPA declined MLB’s request for a formal mediation provided by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS).

Should both sides show an interest in consulting with Walsh, his could be a less formal involvement than that of the FMCS, an organization which has historically been anti-union.

While Walsh could be an interesting solution, the MLBPA has made it clear that they wish only to negotiate with MLB, without the involvement of a third party. Understandable, as MLB has yet to make the MLBPA a counterproposal following last week’s meeting.

MLB owners began the lockout Dec. 2 in response to the expiration of the CBA. The next move is theirs should fans, MLBPA, and even the owners wish to see MLB return in 2022.
