In this story:

The Philadelphia Phillies have had some life breathed into them recently, with the team’s supporting cast stepping up and producing.

One of the players who has turned things around is Alec Bohm. There were plenty of critics who questioned why interim manager Don Mattingly was adjusting his defensive alignment to keep a player who was struggling in the lineup at the expense of moving Bryce Harper to the outfield.

Mattingly was confident that Bohm would turn things around, and he has rewarded his manager with some stellar play over the last few weeks. He had his five-game hitting streak snapped in the team’s last game, but he has been on a tear in the second half, setting himself up for a nice payday in free agency.

Since the All-Star break, Bohm has produced a .319/.365/.466 slash line in 116 at-bats. He has three home runs and eight doubles to go along with 24 RBI. That is a massive improvement over the .215/.278/.354 slash line that he produced in the first half.

In August, he has been on fire with a .354/.403/.492 slash line in 65 at-bats. He has struck out only four times and drawn five walks, showing much better strike zone recognition and putting the ball into play with much more consistency.

The 23 hits that he has in August are only three short of his monthly high in 2026, which came in May when he had 26 hits. With 10 games remaining in the month, including the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 21, it would be a shock if he doesn’t surpass May’s hit total.

A historically poor start to the campaign in March and April is going to weigh down his overall numbers, when he went 16-for-106 at the plate, but Bohm is doing what he can to get his production back to the level the team has been accustomed to receiving.

Staying hot at the plate down the stretch will certainly garner him attention in free agency. But what will really appeal to prospective suitors is how good he has looked defensively playing first base.

Bohm’s production at the hot corner with the glove was underwhelming in 2026, but he has been a plus defender at first base. That kind of versatility will appeal to plenty of teams, especially if he keeps producing positive numbers in the field.

What started out as such a disastrous season, torpedoing his potential value on the free-agent market, is being turned around in a big way by Bohm.
