Jacob deGrom Set for Next Texas Rangers Bullpen Session

Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom continues to inch his way back from an elbow injury he suffered last month.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom will pitch another bullpen session on Friday as he continues to work back from right elbow inflammation.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that everything went fine with deGrom’s light bullpen session on Tuesday and things were progressing.

“He’ll continue to do his rehab, so no new news for you,” Bochy said.

The Rangers have not put a timeline on deGrom’s return.

Tuesday’s bullpen session was the first instance of deGrom throwing off the mound since being hurt. He did some light throwing on the club’s recent west coast road trip.

Earlier this week Rangers general manager Chris Young said the team did have a target date in mind for deGrom’s return, but weren’t ready to reveal it because they’re using this homestand as a chance to evaluate where he is in his rehab.

deGrom accompanied the Rangers on the entire road trip and as late as last week Bochy said deGrom was looking at “two to three weeks” before returning. That would put a return to the mound in late May, but June is looking more likely.

The Rangers aren’t looking to push deGrom, in part because of the depth on their pitching staff at the moment. Dane Dunning has stepped into deGrom’s spot in the rotation and provided three solid starts and has won his last two starts.

deGrom went on the 15-day injured list on April 29 after leaving his last start against the New York Yankees with what the Rangers called right forearm tightness. deGrom had an MRI and was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation.

He is eligible to be activated when ready.
