Texas Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy Ties Hall-of-Famer in Wins

With his next win, Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy will past Leo Durocher for No. 11 in all-time victories.

The 8-2 victory by the Texas Rangers over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday wasn’t just their fifth win of the 2023 season. It was the 2,008th win over manager Bruce Bochy’s career.

The significance? It tied him with Leo Durocher for No. 11 on the all-time wins list for managers.

Bochy entered the season with 2,003 wins from his 25 seasons with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, leading the latter to three World Series titles. During his final season with the Giants he became the 12th manager in history to reach 2,000 wins.

With the Rangers’ next victory, Bochy will pass Durocher.

Durocher had a long player career, winning World Series rings with the New York Yankees in 1928 and St. Louis Cardinals in 1933. But he began his managerial career where his playing career ended — with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

He joined the Dodgers in 1938 and became their player-manager in 1939. He eventually transitioned to full-time manager and left the Dodgers midseason in 1948 to take over the New York Giants. There, he eventually led the Giants to the 1954 World Series title. He left the Giants in 1955.

He also managed the Cubs (1966-72) and Houston Astros (1972-73).

Bochy will likely move into the Top 10 later this season, as Walt Alston is No. 10 with 2,040 wins in his career.

Bochy is No. 2 among active managers in victories behind the Astros’ Dusty Baker, who had 2,096 wins going into Sunday. Baker is No. 9 in all-time wins.

The top eight managers in wins all-time are Connie Mack (3,731), Tony LaRussa (2,846), John McGraw (2,763), Bobby Cox (2,504), Joe Torre (2,326), Sparky Anderson (2,194), Bucky Harris (2,158) and Joe McCarthy (2,125).
