Texas Rangers Look 'Forward' After Sloppy Effort at Cubs
Days are going to happen like the last one in Chicago for the Texas Rangers. More errors than a team would like. Spotty hitting. Just an overall, well, blah effort.
The trick is not letting it happen too much. Especially, if the Rangers hope to accomplish something special this season.
“It’s just chopping up as, I guess, just one of those days that you may occasionally have in 162 games,” manager Bruce Bochy said, according to MLB.com. “You just have to stay away from them as much as you can. That’s one thing I said that has stayed consistent is our defense, baserunning, all those things, and [we] can’t let it get away from us.”
The 10-3 loss Saturday at the Chicago Cubs was easily the most disappointing of the young season. The Rangers committed an uncharacteristic five errors – Texas came in with the seventh-best fielding percentage in baseball – and struggled again at the plate.
Martín Pérez didn’t have his best stuff, laboring through five innings. Add it all up and it’s four losses in the last five games after a 3-0 start.
“I don’t think we helped ourselves out,” Corey Seager said, according to MLB.com. “We didn’t really play great defense. We didn’t really help out our guys when we needed to, so it’s just unfortunate. I just think it happens.
“Errors are gonna happen. You hope it doesn’t happen five times in one game, it’s hard to win a game that it does happen in. So it’s just one of the things where you move on and look forward to [Sunday].”
Sunday’s series finale is 1:20 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field with Texas sending Jon Gray (0-1, 2.84) to the hill. The Rangers (4-4) would love nothing more than to salvage one game and return home with a winning record.
“We’re a resilient ballclub and we want to come out and put together a good ball game and find a way to win one,” Bochy said.
Texas opens its second homestand against the Kansas City Royals on Monday at Globe Life Field.
