Texas Rangers Tab Rookie Cody Bradford to Start Tuesday at LA Angels

The Texas Rangers came into the Los Angeles Angels series without a starter designated by Tuesday's second game.

The Texas Rangers are going with rookie Cody Bradford to start Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium.

The Rangers came into the series without a starter designated for the second game of the series. American League West-leading Texas (88-68) won the opener 5-1 Monday night.

Bradford (4-2, 4.85) is making his eighth spot start of the season. There was thought that Martín Pérez would move back into the rotation in this spot, but the lefty threw 40 pitches in relief in Sunday’s 9-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Bradford last started on Sept. 17 in the spot Max Scherzer vacated due to his regular season-ending injury. (Scherzer still hopes to return during the playoffs.) Bradford gave up six runs on seven hits in only three innings in a 9-2 loss at the Cleveland Guardians.

The Angels will send Reid Detmers (3-10, 4.64) to the hill. The left-hander pitched just four innings in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, allowing three hits and no earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two but didn’t figure in the decision.

Wednesday’s finale will feature right-hander Dane Dunning (11-6, 3.88) opposite Angels right-hander Griffin Canning (7-7, 4.39).

Dunning won his last start against Seattle on Friday, throwing 5 1/3 innings. He gave up four hits and four earned runs, striking out two and walking two. He is 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last seven starts.

Canning threw five innings against Tampa Bay on Thursday, giving up three hits and two earned runs in a no-decision. He struck out seven and walked three. He is 1-3 in his last seven games (five starts) with a 4.21 ERA.
