Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom left Monday’s series opener at the Kansas City Royals after just four innings with soreness in his right wrist.

The Rangers made the move out for cautionary reasons.

The right-hander was cruising at the time, having not allowed a hit and striking out five. He threw only 58 pitches, with 39 strikes, and didn’t seem physically hampered while on the mound.

The Rangers were leading 4-0 at the time of his departure, with home runs from Josh Jung and Marcus Semien accounting for all the scoring.

Texas (10-6) ended up winning by the same score, with Dane Dunning picking up his first victory of the season by 4 1/3 scoreless innings after deGrom.

It was the first road start of the season for deGrom, who came into the game at 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA. His ERA dropped almost a full run to 3.48.

The Rangers were undefeated in deGrom’s first three starts for the franchise, though he took two no-decisions. deGrom was bothered early in Spring Training with tightness in his left side, which shut him down early in camp.

He ramped up going into the regular season and had thrown more than 90 pitches in each of his last two starts.
