Tekoah Roby took his first loss of the season for Double-A Frisco, but he also put together his first quality start of the 2023 season in the RoughRiders’ 4-1 loss to the San Antonio Missions on Saturday night.

Roby, the Texas Rangers’ No. 11 prospect per MLB.com, was coming off a start in which he failed to get out of the fourth inning. In that game, he threw 3 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, three runs and three walks. He also struck out five.

Against the Missions, Roby was able to complete six innings in 78 pitches, even though he gave up more runs (four) than in his first outing. He also gave up eight hits. He walked none and he struck out seven.

Roby allowed two runs in the bottom of the second as the Missions infielder Luis Aviles Jr. doubled to drive in Chandler Seagle and Brantley Bell.

In the sixth, Seagle singled off Roby and scored Korry Howell. Bell followed with a double that scored Seagle, giving the Missions the final margin of victory.

Roby is coming off a 2022 season in which he went 3-11 with a 4.64 ERA in 22 games (21 starts). He threw a career-high 104 2/3 innings, walked 35 and struck out 126. Batters hit .239 against him.

The Rangers selected Roby in the third round of the 2020 MLB draft. He excelled in instructional league and in 2021 he had a 2.45 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 22 innings as a 19-year-old in Low-A before getting shut down in mid-June with a sprained elbow.
