Ex-Red Sox Catcher Reportedly Set To Hit Open Market; Should Boston Consider Reunion?

One former member of the Boston Red Sox is on the move.

Former Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki reportedly opted out of his minor league contract with the Washington Nationals after failing to be called up to the big league club, according to the Washington Post's Andrew Golden.

"Source: Catcher Kevin Plawecki has opted out of his contract with Class AAA Rochester," Golden said.

The 32-year-old backstop spent parts of three seasons with Boston after joining the club ahead of the 2020 campaign. Plawecki signed with Boston as a free agent and mainly served in a backup role with the club but was impressive. Over three seasons, Plawecki slashed .270/.333/.364 to go along with five home runs and 44 RBIs in 148 games.

Boston designated Plawecki for assignment during the 2022 campaign after a rocky start to the season and eventually signed with the Texas Rangers as a free agent. Plawecki has bounced around since and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead of the 2023 campaign, but failed to make the club's Opening Day roster so he opted out of his deal. He then joined the Nationals on a minor league contract and although he has impressed at the Triple-A level, hasn't made an appearance yet with the big league club so he also reportedly opted out of the deal as he looks for another big league opportunity.

Plawecki will become a free agent once again looking for a new home. It may some sense for Boston to add him on a minor league deal if he fails to find a big league offer elsewhere. The 32-year-old has some experience with the Boston staff and could be a veteran depth piece that the club could call up if Connor Wong or Reese McGuire were to deal with injuries at any point this season.

The Red Sox also have Jorge Alfaro in Triple-A, but it wouldn't hurt to add more veteran depth just in case injuries pop up. Boston already has dealt with a plethora of injuries so far this season, so it wouldn't hurt to add more depth just in case.
