Ex-Red Sox Pitcher Getting First Chance In Big Leagues In Years After Red-Hot Start To Season

One former member of the Red Sox is getting a second chance in the big leagues

The Oakland Athletics are taking a chance on a former member of the Boston Red Sox

Oakland selected the contract of former Red Sox pitcher Yacksel Rios after recently acquiring the hurler from the Atlanta Braves, according to the club.

Rios last appeared in a big league game with the Red Sox in 2021 and has since bounced around the minor leagues looking for another opportunity at the big league level. The 29-year-old spent the 2022 season in the Chicago White Sox organization but never was able to break through with the big league club after compiling a 4.91 ERA across 30 appearances with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.

The righty joined the Braves on a minor league deal ahead of the 2023 campaign and pitched to a 2.49 ERA in 22 appearances with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers. Rios had a clause in his contract where the Braves either had to call him up to the big league active roster or send him to a club that would.

Rios now will have another shot at the big league level after being called up to the Athletics on Tuesday afternoon. Throughout his career, he has spent time at the big league level with the Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, and now the Athletics. Rios is a five-year veteran at the big league level and has pitched to a 5.77 ERA across 89 appearances. The righty's best season came in 2021 where he pitched to a 4.28 ERA across 23 appearances with the Red Sox and Mariners.

Hopefully, Rios is able to carry over his momentum from the Triple-A level and is able to stick around in the big leagues with the Athletics.
