Rangers Officially Land Ex-Red Sox Catcher In Early Trade Deadline Swap With Padres

Texas officially traded for a former member of the Red Sox on Friday

One former member of the Boston Red Sox reportedly is on the move.

Former Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki has had a roller coaster of a season that has seen him spend time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, and San Diego Padres but now reportedly will be on the move again after being traded to the Texas Rangers, according to the club.

"In a minor league trade, C Kevin Plawecki has been acquired from San Diego in exchange for cash considerations," the Rangers said via Tweet. "He will be assigned to Round Rock (AAA)."

Plawecki appeared in three games with the Rangers after being designated for assignment by Boston so he at least has somewhat of a familiarity with the club. The 32-year-old joined the Red Sox ahead of the 2020 campaign and remained with the club until he was designated for assignment in 2022. He was a solid depth piece for the Red Sox and in 148 games slashed .270/.333/.364 to go along with five home runs and 44 RBIs.

The 32-year-old has been solid at the minor league level so far this season but hasn't been able to make his way back up to the big leagues yet. In 33 games most recently in the Padres farm system with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas, Plawecki slashed .276/.333/.439 to go along with three home runs and 21 RBIs. He likely will serve as a veteran depth piece in the Rangers organization who may see time at the big league level if an injury pops up. Hopefully, he can impress in the minor leagues and work his way back up to the majors quickly.
