Red Sox Reportedly 'Real Threat' To Land Superstar Shohei Ohtani This Offseason

Boston reportedly actually could end up landing the best player in baseball this offseason

The Boston Red Sox have a very interesting offseason ahead of them.

Boston has some work to do after two straight seasons with just 78 wins and the club has plenty of money to spend. Plus, it doesn't hurt that arguably the most interesting player in baseball history will be available in Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.

The Red Sox have been linked to the superstar in the past but a move seemed like a pipe dream. As we get closer to free agency, a move reportedly is growing more likely, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Shohei Ohtani and the Red Sox are starting to be linked more and more," Heyman said. "One executive with an interested team said he believes they are a real threat. Ohtani has a new big deal with New Balance out of Boston. Perhaps more important: The Red Sox need to balance things out after three last-place finishes in four years.

"If the Red Sox do land Ohtani, maybe their faithful forget Mookie Betts. For a little while, anyway."

Ohtani won't be able to pitch in 2024 after suffering an elbow injury but should be ready to hit in time for Opening Day and his bat alone would help take the Red Sox to another level. If the Red Sox were to add another pitcher or two in free agency this offseason, plus Ohtani, that could be the beginning of something special.

There are sure to be plenty more rumors before Ohtani ultimately signs the dotted line with a new club, but, interestingly, Boston continues to be mentioned as an option. Ohtani will return to the mound in 2024, hopefully, it is at Fenway Park.
