In this story:

Pedro Martinez certainly is doing his part.

The Boston Red Sox legend and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer is not just known for his skills on the field, but also for the countless people he has helped through the Pedro Martinez Foundation.

Martinez found his foundation in 2007 and ever since has helped provide children in both the Dominican Republic and United States with education, social services and mentorship.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner continued his philanthropic efforts recently as he traveled to Washington D.C. for the Fifth Annual Dominicans on the Hill Day to serve as a keynote panelist and help raise awareness of contributions of the Dominican diaspora and impact that Dominican baseball players have had.

"Martinez and his wife Carolina, President of the Pedro Martinez Foundation, were honored at the Fifth Annual Dominicans on the Hill Day on Wednesday, Feb. 8," per the Pedro Martinez Foundation's official press release. "The event was hosted by Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and gathered hundreds of community leaders, students and elected officials to address the important issues related to education and other relevant matters.

"Martinez took part in the day’s keynote panel discussing the cultural and economic value that baseball brings to the Dominican diaspora, bringing his experience from the diamond as well as his work with the Pedro Martinez Foundation. At Capitol Hill, Martinez discussed how access to sports and education can improve communities, which has been the focus of the Foundation’s work in the Dominican Republic and the United States."

Martinez certainly shined on the baseball field as he developed into one of the most dominant starting pitchers of all time, but the work he and his foundation have been doing off the field may shine even brighter.
