Red Sox Option Slugger Down To Minor Leagues To Make Room On Roster For Alex Verdugo

In this story:
The Boston Red Sox will have one of their best players back in the lineup Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins.
Boston outfielder Alex Verdugo recently was placed on the Bereavement List and was reinstated to the big league roster Tuesday afternoon. The Red Sox optioned slugger Bobby Dalbec back to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox to make room on the roster for Verdugo, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.
"Alex Verdugo was reinstated from the bereavement list and Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Worcester," McCaffrey said.
Verdugo last took the field for Boston on June 21 against the Minnesota Twins. The 27-year-old is in the middle of the best season of his young career and is slashing .303/.374/.468 to go along with five home runs, four triples, and 31 RBIs across 71 games played. Boston certainly will be happy to see him back in the lineup Tuesday night as the club went 1-3 in his absence, including a series loss against the lowly Chicago White Sox.
Dalbec was recalled by the Red Sox during Verdugo's absence and appeared in two games and registered just one at-bat which resulted in a strikeout. The young slugger has been tearing it up lately with Worcester, but there doesn't seem to be a role for him with the big league club. The 2023 MLB Trade Deadline is quickly approaching and with each passing day, it seems more and more likely that Dalbec will be on the move. The 27-year-old recently discussed his desire to be moved at the deadline and manager Alex Cora also weighed in on the hulking first baseman's future.
At this point, we may have seen the last of him with the Red Sox unless injuries pop up ahead of the trade deadline.
