On This Date 25 Years Ago: Cincinnati Reds Make Blockbuster Trade for Greg Vaughn

What a move by the Reds that helped them get close to the 100-win mark.

CINCINNATI — The Reds traded for Greg Vaughn 25 years ago today. It was a move that helped them win 96 games in 1999.

The Reds traded Reggie Sanders, Damian Jackson and Josh Harris to the Padres in exchange for Vaughn and Mark Sweeney.

Vaughn only played one season for the Reds, but he hit 45 home runs, finished with 118 RBI, posted a .881 OPS and finished fourth in MVP voting.

The Reds finished the season 96-67, but missed the playoffs after dropping four of their final five games, including a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets in a one-game playoff.

Vaughn signed with the Tampa Bay Rays in free agency and spent four more seasons in the big leagues
