In this story:

The Colorado Rockies dropped their most recent game on Saturday to the Cleveland Guardians and lost another series. That was to be expected as the Guardians are a far better team than the Rockies and are fighting in the American League wild card race.

But there is good news to come out of the loss and the fact that the Rockies are not going to make the postseason once the calendar hits October real soon. Starting pitcher and rookie Gabriel Hughes turned in another good outing for the Rockies and is becoming more consistent with each outing.

Hughes completed five innings for the Rockies where he gave up three runs on four hits while walking two batters, striking out two batters, and giving up one home run. Those numbers are not bad for a rookie going up against another team that has a lot of power in their lineup.

The fact that Hughes is providing consistency for manager Warren Schaeffer's club that is rebuilding and faces a lot of rotation questions next season beyond Chase Dollander, is quite impressive. Hughes might be locking down his rotation spot for next season in Colorado with another good performance.

Rockies Rotation Uncertainty Helps Hughes

There are going to be a lot of questions before next season begins, if it begins if there is not a lockout, about who is going to be in the rotation for the Rockies. There should be one lock in the rotation if the season starts in Kyle Freeland who is a veteran that can cover innings.

But beyond that, there is going to be a lot of questions and a lot of optioning players from Triple-A and calling them up and sending them down. Dollander has been on the shelf for the Rockies for quite some time now with an elbow injury and who knows if he is going to be ready to start next year.

That is where Hughes comes in because he has made a few starts so far this season for the Rockies and seems to be making a good impression so far. And with there being a lot of questions outside of Freeland in the rotation next season, Hughes could take one of those spots.

The fact that he is pitching well in his outings so far this year, could earn him a spot next year. It just depends on the plan that Schaeffer and crew have for the Rockies rotation if there is a baseball season in 2027.
