Detroit Tigers Set to Welcome Another Rookie to the Big Leagues

In this story:
The Detroit Tigers' season has been filled with debuts of the future stars for the franchise. From Kevin McGonigle making the team out of spring training to Hao-Yu Lee making a name for himself to Max Clark, who was recently called up, the future looks bright for Detroit.
The future is also already present, as starting pitchers such as Troy Melton and Jackson Jobe are taking over the starting rotation. For a Tigers team still in the playoff hunt, despite an underperforming record, Detroit is turning to another rookie to help lead the charge before the road trip is over.
Another Rookie Projected to Make MLB Debut

Following game two on Saturday night, which will feature Drew Anderson as the starting pitcher, former 10th-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft Andrew Sears is set to make his debut on Sunday. The original starter was Framber Valdez, but his start has been pushed back and is not due to injury.
According to Chris McCosty of The Detroit News on X (formerly Twitter), Sears is in Kansas City with the team for game two against the Royals, getting acclimated to his surroundings and peers. Detroit will have a bulk bullpen day for the series finale, which will be center stage for Sears.
Sears has pitched at multiple levels in the Tigers organization this season. From West Michigan for four games to Double-A Erie for nine, to Triple-A Toledo for two, Sears is ready to make his debut.
Across all levels of the minor leagues, Sears holds a 2.16 ERA in 16 games this season, with 12 starts, 67 strikeouts, and pitching in 58.1 innings. A South Paw on the mound, Sears has the chance to fill in nicely along with other young starting pitchers for Detroit.
In 2026, he predominantly played in the minors at the Double-A level, where he appeared in nine games, starting seven of them. Over those outings, he pitched a total of 35 innings and recorded 35 strikeouts. He held opposing hitters to a .219 batting average in Double-A and an impressive .069 batting average in two games with the Toledo Mud Hens.
For a struggling Detroit bullpen, perhaps if Sears blows the front office away with his limited performance, he'll be granted a chance to stay in the Tigers' bullpen. The bullpen has easily been the biggest downfall for the franchise this season, and adding a new face might be what it needs for motivation down the final stretch of 2026.
