In this story:

The Detroit Tigers opened their weekend with a Friday night bout at the Kansas City Royals with their ace Troy Melton taking the mound.

Manager AJ Hinch and crew know that they have a chance to win a game every time Melton takes the mound and that he is now the ace ever since Tarik Skubal departed.

Melton did not have his best stuff and actually struggled just a little bit but was mainly let down by his offense that did not produce any runs to help him out. Melton completed 5.2 innings where he only gave up three runs on six hits (two earned runs) while walking three batters, striking out three batters, and giving up two home runs.

That kind of outing should win a team a game 99 times out of 100 every single time. But the Tigers offense was stymied by Royals starter Noah Cameron and the guys behind him in their bullpen.

The Tigers need wins knowing that they are in the thick of the American League wild card race but they let their ace down offensively. The Tigers have a lot of guys that can pick up the slack with the bats but was not a good showing on Friday night.

Melton is doing a nice job replacing Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize

Ever since the Tigers decided to trade their co-aces Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize at the deadline, Melton has had to step into the ace role and has done more than enough with what he has been given. Despite the rough outing against the Royals, Melton has done a great job at the top of the rotation for Detroit.

Before his recent outing, Melton had thrown 84.1 innings this season with an ERA of 1.49 and a WHIP of 0,96 with 73 strikeouts and 25 walks on the season. Those kind of numbers for a player having to step into a new role after the roster was shaken up, is quite impressive for a player of his caliber.

Melton is seemingly the ace now for the Tigers and into the future since they no longer have their 1A and 1B on staff or their starting rotation anymore. Melton has had to take on a bigger role than he likely expected coming into the season way back in April.

But Melton has handled it way better than anyone had expected him to. He is doing way more than managerment has asked of him and he is absolutely blossoming.
