Two New York Yankees Named Gold Glove Finalists

Anthony Volpe is a rookie and first-time finalist while Anthony Rizzo missed the final two months of the season for the Yankees.

The New York Yankees have two Gold Glove finalists for 2023. One is a rookie. The other is quite the surprise.

Rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe claimed his first finalist award for a Gold Glove at shortstop. The other was first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who missed a good portion of the season with a concussion and post-concussion symptoms.

Volpe played 159 games during his rookie season with the Yankees and finished with a fielding percentage of .970. He had 357 assists and 17 errors. Plus, he helped turn 63 double plays.

He is up against two veterans for the award — Texas’ Corey Seager and Minnesota’s Carlos Correa.

Correa won a Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove in 2021 with the Houston Astros. Seager has never won a Gold Glove, but he is coming off one of his best defensive seasons.

Rizzo is a curious case. He played in 99 games for the Yankees, but post-concussion symptoms kept him out of the lineup for most of the final two months of the season. But, when he played, he spent 92 games at first base and finished with a fielding percentage of .995. He only committed four errors and helped turn 58 double plays.

Rizzo has four career Gold Gloves, all with the Chicago Cubs.

His fellow finalists at first base are Nathaniel Lowe of the Texas Rangers and Ryan Mountcastle of the Baltimore Orioles.

The winners will be announced in November.
