Would Yankees Include Pitching Prospect Beeter in Trade Deadline Deal?

The New York Yankees are looking to improve at the Major League level and that could cost them talent at the Triple-A level.

The New York Yankees acquired a pitcher at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for Joey Gallo. Could the Yankees move that pitcher for an impact player at this year’s trade deadline?

The Yankees are trying to figure out what could help their team with less than two weeks before the trade deadline on Aug. 1. There are scenarios that bring Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to the Bronx. There are also rumors that link the Yankees to Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger, who is considered one of the top bats on the potential trade market.

To make deals like that, the Yankees would have to give up considerable talent, including from their farm system.

The Yankees are a bit pitching-rich at the moment, but one pitcher could catch the eye of potential trade partners.

CBS Sports put together a list of eight American League teams and the one prospect they could deal for help at the trade deadline. MLB.com did the same thing recently and highlighted the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect Spencer Jones.

CBS went with the pitcher the Yankees got in return for Gallo last season — Clayton Beeter. The reasons?

Beeter, obtained from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Joey Gallo, has big-time stuff and small-time command. His control issues are nothing new, but he's walked more than 12% of the batters he's faced this season in the minors. Ordinarily, we'd say that makes it hard to see him starting for long at the big-league level; given the changing nature of the starting pitcher position, it's at least possible some team would overlook his walks to gain his bat-missing ability in the rotation.

Beeter started the season with Double-A Somerset and was later promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Combined he is 6-3 this season with a 2.49 ERA, including 89 strikeouts and 39 walks. He’s been a minor-leaguer since 2021, when the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him with the No. 66 overall pick out of Texas Tech.

If the Yankees want to make a move, the clock is ticking — and Beeter could be involved.
