In this story:

Former New York Yankees first baseman Luke Voit is returning for his second stint with the Mets.

On Monday morning, Voit officially signed a minor league contract with the Mets, which includes an invitation to big-league spring training.

Voit spent three and a half seasons with the Yankees, who acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals at the 2018 trade deadline, and broke out in the Bronx as the team's everyday first baseman.

During his time with the Yankees, Voit hit 68 home runs, drove in 182 runs, and slashed .271/.363/.520 with a .883 OPS in 281 games. He also led the majors in homers with 22 in the Covid-shortened 2020 campaign, which saw him come in ninth in the AL MVP race as a result.

However, Voit fell out of favor in 2021 due to an injury plagued season. This led to the Yankees decision to acquire perennial All-Star Anthony Rizzo at the trade deadline, who took over at first base. From there, Voit was traded to the San Diego Padres in the offseason, thus ending his time with the Yankees.

Voit had a solid season with the Padres in 2022, where he hit 22 homers and drove in 69 RBIs, but his OPS dipped down to .710. He also was dealt to the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline in the blockbuster deal that sent Juan Soto to San Diego.

While 2023 was basically a lost season for Voit at the major league level, he was highly productive with the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, 14 homers, 35 RBIs, 1.058 OPS, before opting out of his deal in August to join the Milwaukee Brewers for 22 games.

The former Yankees' standout, who is now 33-years-old, is trying to get back to being a productive player in the big-leagues. He may have a chance to do so with the Mets, whose DH spot is up for grabs at the moment.
