MMA star Conor McGregor has been issued a boxing license in California, Brett Okamoto of ESPN and Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com report.

McGregor was stripped of his featherweight title without serious explanation by the UFC this week, after winning the lightweight title this month. The move pertained to the UFC’s business interests and competitive balance.

McGregor will now be allowed to box competitively in California, with rumors having long linked him to a fight with Floyd Mayweather.

"He's qualified [as a boxer]," California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster told MMAFighting.com. "I'd love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We're happy to license him. We're happy he's a California fighter."
