The Mercury's Road To The Title
Mercury Win!
In the 2009 WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury beat the Indiana Fever in five games for their second WNBA title in three years. Here's a look back at highlights from the series.
Game 1
How's this for an opening game: the lead changed hands six times -- in overtime alone. By the time the Mercury wrapped up the 120-116 win, the two squads had made it the highest-scoring game in WNBA history.
Game 1
Cappie Pondexter was the hero for the Mercury in Game 1: After missing a potential game-winner at the end of regulation, she scored seven of her 23 points.
Game 2
This one awakened the monster in Tamika Catchings. After scoring just eight points and fouling out in Game 1, Catching put up 19 points, nine rebounds and tied a finals record with eight assists to help the Fever even the series.
Game 3
Ebony Hoffman saved the day for the Fever. After giving her team a one-point lead with 57 seconds left, she blocked Tangela Smith's potential game-winner with a second remaining to help Indiana take a one game lead.
Game 3
Among the celebrities who came out to Indiana to support the squad: Peyton Manning. The Conseco Center was sold out for Game 3 and 4 of the Finals.
Game 4
Think the Mercury were going to go quietly? In Game 4, Cappie Pondexter came through with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds to send the series back to Phoenix for the deciding game.
Game 5
With the series back in Phoenix, Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald came out to support his local team.
Game 5
With the trophy on the line, WNBA regular season MVP Diana Taurasi took over, putting up 26 points while Cappie Pondexter added 24.
Game 5
Penny Taylor's two free throws with 37.7 seconds left sealed the crown for the Mercury.
