Can NBA players file for unemployment?
Ty Lawson recently posed an interesting thought on his Twitter account. "I wonder if I can file for unemployment." So we asked. Can an NBA or NFL player currently apply for unemployment due to the lockouts in each sport? The short answer is no, not yet anyway. Larry Parker, a spokesman for the N.C. Employment Security Commission, sent the following explanation in an email to the Observer: "The answer right now is no, NBA players would not be eligible for benefits, mainly due to fact the NBA season is not in session. There is a reasonable expectation on the players part that they may play once the season begins." Certainly the league will reinforce that impression Tuesday when all 30 teams release regular-season schedules. (Sacramento Bee)Comment
Price set for Kolb? Rodgers-Cromartie
The Cardinals, who may pay dearly for a new quarterback, believe they have much to offer in return. That's one of the things Ken Whisenhunt has said this offseason after the club passed on drafting a quarterback in April. Arizona is in the market for a quarterback when the new league year begins, and it sounds like the Cardinals are preparing to offer plenty for a new quarterback. [According to a report] Kevin Kolb is the passer the Cardinals are poised to pursue. ... [The Cardinals] are prepared to offer cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie "straight up" for Kolb. ... Angels out of luck on Ramirez ... until August?
Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez doesn't have to go anywhere. [Ramirez] is on the Angels' wish list, but as of now he is unwilling to approve any trade, according to his agent, Paul Kinzer. However, Ramirez's stance could change once his wife and children return to the Dominican Republic for the start of school, something that probably will not occur until August, according to Kinzer. "I don't see it happening," Kinzer said of a deal before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. "When his family goes back, and his kids go back to school, that could possibly loosen it up. As of now, he has no interest. He loves Chicago. He always wanted to finish his career there." (FOXSports.com)Comment
