As Johnny Manziel nears his NFL career, the pair will soon have something else in common: professional athlete. LeBron James has always seen [Manziel] as a kindred spirit, consistently overanalyzed, sometimes harshly scrutinized. He's also known to be open to mentoring younger athletes, so he was receptive when a call came from people close to the Texas A&M quarterback. ... "When the opportunity was brought to me, I basically just told him, if he's willing to listen, if he's willing to take my advice, then I'm willing to give it," James said. "And throughout this whole season, I would text him weekly before the games and after the games. I didn't know it would lead to us being together now because of business, but I was happy to help him.".

Alex Rodriguez may be having a change of heart. For [Rodriguez], the decision of whether to accept a suspension or fight on comes down to dollars and sense. As the day for arbitrator Fredric Horowitz to rule on Rodriguez's appeal of his 211-game ban draws near -- some think it could come as soon as Friday -- the beleaguered slugger has discussed the possibility of accepting a reduced ban without attempting to get an injunction delaying his punishment, according to a source in A-Rod's camp. According to the source, a suspension longer than 100 games will likely lead Rodriguez and his attorneys to pursue a temporary restraining order against Horowitz's ruling in federal court. If he is given a shorter suspension, however, "then Alex will have some things to think about," the source told ESPNNewYork.com.

The question is simple in a number of NBA cities. Should the Mavs take a shot at Andrew Bynum? Answer: Yes, though he may not be any more interested in them than he was the Cavs. Bynum -- who is 26, apparently recovered from his knee problems and very, very large -- had shown such little heart lately in Cleveland that the Cavs traded him to the Bulls, who dumped his contract the next day. ... Bynum said in November that he'd lost his "joy for basketball," but it probably wasn't personal. More likely he lost his joy playing for the Cavs. He reportedly wants to play for a contender. The Mavs, who have not expressed interest, probably don't make his list. Under the right circumstances, he could still make a difference.
