Another day, another new name for the Lakers' coaching search. This time, it's former player and assistant coach Kurt Rambis, who served as the team's interim head coach during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, who met with Los Angeles for the team's open head coaching position. L.A. has now interviewed three potential head coaches — Rambis, Byron Scott and Mike Dunleavy — and plans to interview Alvin Gentry and Lionel Hollins later this week. All told, the team reportedly plans to talk to at least 10 candidates, possibly including Oklahoma City guard Derek Fisher, whose name has also come up in connection with the Knicks' open head coaching job. Texans say QB race is wide open
As of right now, there's no favorite for the starting quarterback job in Houston. That's according to Texans head coach Bill O'Brien, who told reporters after the first day of organized team activities that the race to be under center for Week 1 is "wide open." The competition is currently between veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, second-year player Case Keenum, fourth-year player T.J. Yates, and rookie Tom Savage, who was drafted out of Pittsburgh in the fourth round of this year's draft. Of the quartet, Fitzpatrick has the most experience as a starter in the NFL, with 77 starts to his name. Keenum made eight starts last season in relief of Matt Schaub, who was traded to Oakland in the offseason; Yates has started five games, all coming back in 2011, as well as Houston's two playoff games that year. New Capitals GM puts owner on notice
Ted Leonsis got some straight talk during his interview with new Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan: What he could do better as an owner. MacLellan, who has spent the last seven years as Washington's assistant GM, told Leonsis point blank what he needed to do to improve as an owner when interviewing for the Capitals' vacant GM job, and that impressed the team's longtime boss. "I thought he was very brave and very astute, because you don't want to hear things like that," Leonsis said. "I was very appreciative of that." MacLellan is taking over for George McPhee, who was let go as GM at the end of the season after 17 years with Washington. (Toronto Sun)Comment
