Andrew Wiggins has been hoping for trade, says Bill Self in report

Sunday August 10th, 2014

Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self revealed over the weekend that former Jayhawk Andrew Wiggins has been hoping for a trade from the Cavaliers to the Timberwolves for as long as there have been reports about the two teams being engaged in discussions, according to an Associated Press report on Sunday.

Wiggins, the No 1. overall pick in this year's draft, is the centerpiece of a trade that's reportedly been agreed-upon by the Timberwolves and Cavaliers. In that deal, Wiggins and last year's No. 1 overall pick, Anthony Bennett, head to Minnesota in exchange for Wolves All-Star power forward Kevin Love. The Cavs would also send their 2015 protected first round pick to Minnesota as part of the deal.

SI WIRE: NBA could potentially block the Cavaliers-Timberwolves trade

Self said Wiggins has believed for a while that Minnesota is better for his long term future:

"When all this trade stuff started, I talked to Andrew and Andrew told me, "I hope I get traded. And I'm like, 'No you don't.' And he said, "Coach, I do. It's better for me, knowing my personality and what I need to do, to go somewhere where I'm forced to be something as opposed to going in there where they're going to be patient with me and I'm going to be a piece."

Wiggins signed his rookie deal with the Cavaliers at the end of July. Per NBA rules, he cannot be moved until 30 days after he signed the deal, which means the weekend of August 23 is the earliest he could potentially be traded from the Cavaliers.
