Smart was most recently the head coach of the Sacramento Kings before he was fired in 2013 following a 48-93 record over two seasons. He has also been the head coach of both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors. His career head coaching record is 93-170.

The Heat reassigned assistant coaches Ron Rothstein and Bob McAdoo earlier this week to make room for Juwan Howard.

Miami lost LeBron James this offseason when he returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Heat offseason acquisitions included the signing of Luol Deng to a two-year, $20 million contract and Josh McRoberts to a four-year, $23 million deal.
