Video: Raptors edge Grizzlies in Vince Carter's emotional return to Toronto
The Raptors honored former star Vince Carter in his return to Toronto before Wednesday night's 96-92 win against Carter's Memphis Grizzlies.
As part of the franchise's 20th-year celebrations, the Raptors played a video tribute to Carter, leading the crowd to give him a standing ovation. Carter became emotional and acknowledged the fans several times.
The No. 5 pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Carter was acquired by the Raptors in a draft-night trade with the Golden State Warriors and played with the franchise until 2004. Carter scored seven points in 27 minutes of action. Guard DeMar DeRozan added 21 points to lead the Raptors who improve to an Eastern Conference-leading 9-2. The Grizzlies fall to 10-2 with the loss. Both teams are off to surprising starts this season.
Carter rose to stardom with Toronto, winning Rookie of the Year in 1998-99, making five All-Star teams with the Raptors and electrifying fans with his high-flying style. Carter also helped lead the team to three playoff appearances, including the franchise's lone playoff series win in 2000-01.
Carter, though, fell out of favor in Toronto due to injuries and questions about his effort. He was traded to the New Jersey Nets in December 2004 and later played with the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericksbefore signing with the Grizzlies this offseason.

The 37-year-old had mostly been booed in return trips to Toronto before Wednesday night.
Carter is averaging 5.8 points in 15.2 minutes per game this season. For his career, Carter has averaged 20.1 points and has made eight All-Star game appearances.
