DALLAS (AP) The Mavericks have signed backup center Bernard James to a second 10-day contract and are likely to keep him all season for depth in the frontcourt.

James, who spent his first two years in Dallas before getting released at the end of training camp this season, had nine points and three rebounds against Utah last week while Tyson Chandler was sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Chandler returned for the first game after the All-Star break at Oklahoma City, and James played just 8 minutes. James didn't play Friday against Houston.

James spent time in China after his release by Dallas. The Mavericks have to sign him for the rest of the season if they want to keep him past the second 10-day deal, which was announced Saturday.
