Derrick Rose misses USAB minicamp, will sit out 2016 Rio Olympics
Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose will sit out the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, reports the Chicago Tribune.
Rose is currently in the first offseason since 2011 in which he is not rehabilitating an injury. Trainer Rob McClanaghan said Rose is working out five days a week, “not going long but ... going hard.”
Rose opted out of this week’s Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has said minicamp participants must be committed to playing in the Olympics and reiterated that to the Tribune while discussing Rose.
“I made it mandatory for anyone to be involved going forward they had to be here,” Colangelo said. “I have to stand by what I said.”

“I’ve been a big Derrick fan. I was really happy for him when he joined us originally. I’ve been disappointed in his injuries that have prevented him from staying at a level that everyone had anticipated and he certainly wanted to be at. But I respect his decision.”
Rose, 26, won gold medals with Team USA at the 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Championships. He was on track to play in the 2012 Summer Games but tore the ACL in his left knee during the NBA playoffs.
Rose tore his right meniscus for the second time last season, returning in time for the playoffs. In 51 games last season, he averaged 17.7 points, 4.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.
