Browns CB K'Waun Williams told he needs surgery, will appeal suspension
The Browns have suspended cornerback K'Waun Williams following an injury dispute, the team announced on Wednesday.
The suspension, for conduct detrimental to the team, will be for two weeks and will be accompanied by a fine.
Williams and the Browns have been at odds since the cornerback missed the team’s first preseason game, reports Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. Williams sustained an ankle injury during practice last week, and sat himself before the Browns’ game against the Packers last Friday after he felt he was too sore to play, according to Cabot.
The team announced before the game Williams was sitting out for a personal reason, apparently in disagreement over the severity of his ankle injury. Williams has not practiced with the team since the game as he sought a second opinion on his ankle.
Williams received that second opinion on Wednesday, and was told by an independent specialist at the Cleveland Clinic that he needs surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle.
The assessment gives Williams grounds to appeal the suspension and fine, which his agent told Cabot he intends to do.
Sources told Cabot the cornerback could also be considering retirement.
Williams has played nickel cornerback for Cleveland the last two seasons. He is in a battle with Jamar Taylor for the spot in training camp.
