Sixers News: President of Basketball Ops Daryl Morey Extends Contract

In this story:
The Philadelphia 76ers are securing more seasons with their President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Morey and the team have agreed on a contract extension, which would keep Morey running the front office through the 2027-2028 season.
Morey first joined the Sixers’ front office in the 2020 offseason. At the time, he was wrapping up a long-term tenure as the Houston Rockets’ General Manager. With the Rockets headed towards a rebuild following the 2019-2020 season, Morey was one of the organization’s key members who moved on.
Although it seemed Morey was headed toward an exit from basketball, he became the Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations. At the time, Philadelphia was changing over head coaches after firing Brett Brown following a seven-season run. When Morey joined the 76ers, Doc Rivers was brought on as Brown’s replacement.
Throughout his first three seasons running the show in Philadelphia, Morey’s Sixers made the playoffs each time. Although they advanced past the first round in all three runs, the Sixers haven’t managed to make it past the Eastern Conference Semifinals round so far.
After wrapping up the 2023 NBA Playoffs, Morey and the Sixers decided to move on from Doc Rivers. For the first time since taking over Philly’s front office, Morey led a head coach search. After considering several candidates, Morey landed on former Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.
So far this season, the Sixers are off to a 16-7 start, which places them fourth in the Eastern Conference. Once again, they are one of the East’s biggest playoff threats. While the Sixers’ hopes of winning a title with Morey at the helm are still in play, an extension shows they are confident he is the guy to continue steering them in the right direction.
